What is SAP Business ByDesign?
Intelligent Cloud ERP for the Mid-Market
SAP Business ByDesign (ByD) is a born-in-the-cloud ERP solution delivered on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model. The solution is aimed at medium-sized organisations accommodating 20 users up to 10,000 without constraints. Users pay a single recurring monthly subscription to access the system.
SAP Business ByDesign is updated quarterly to provide mid-market users with the latest SAP innovation. The solution is used by more than 11,000 companies globally across more than 161 countries. SAP Business ByDesign supports more than 20 languages, includes more than 60+ standard localisations, and is typically deployed in a minimum of 8 to 12 weeks.
What is included in SAP Business ByDesign?
SAP Business ByDesign includes several core modules filled with SAP best-practice scenario processes. These features help organisations unify all core functions in a single, end-to-end business suite.
Modules for finance, customer relationship management, human resources, project management, procurement and supply chain management help organisations integrate key processes, store critical business information on a single database and use in-depth business intelligence tools.
In addition to the core functionality, the ERP solution is easily customised, with nearly 10,000 separate add-ons available to bolt into the system seamlessly. This helps companies working with the professional services, manufacturing or wholesale distribution sectors to use industry-specific functionality to grow, innovate and boost profits.
How much is SAP Business ByDesign?
Each SAP Business ByDesign system must include SAP’s base package. The SAP Business ByDesign Base Package includes two advanced and three core users. This means that every SAP Business ByDesign system will have a minimum of five users.
Also included within the base package is access to a productive and test tenant and three-country specific versions in a dedicated multi-tenant system. There are three different user types for SAP Business ByDesign: Advanced, Core and Self-Service. The number of users in each category will determine how much the solution will cost your business overall. Self-service user licenses start from as little as £15 per user per month.
Unlike other ERP solutions, companies that run SAP Business ByDesign will never have to pay for updates or the latest mid-market innovation. Companies automatically receive quarterly releases in the Base Package as part of their license agreement. What is the difference between SAP Business One and SAP Business ByDesign?
This is a question that a lot of people ask. The solutions are both enterprise resource planning systems, so they are similar in many ways. But not in others. For instance, SAP Business ByDesign has been developed and designed specifically for users to work in real-time in a virtual environment. SAP Business One is primarily deployed in the cloud, although you still have the option to run an on-premise solution.
Although SAP Business ByDesign has a deeper range of functionality that comes as standard, not all these tools may not be required by all organisations. In contrast, most businesses will utilise the core tools in SAP Business One, and it is worth mentioning SAP Business One also has an extended eco-system meaning it is more agile and flexible in its extensibility.
SAP Business ByDesign is likely to be deployed by a fast-growing organisation that needs to scale quickly or an organisation with ambitions to move out of the SME space. SAP Business ByDesign is a cloud ERP for the mid-market. Organisations typically start with around 20 users and then work their way up. It’ll be the only ERP solution a company ever needs and uses in many cases.
Another benefit of using SAP Business ByDesign is that users always have access to the latest innovation on the platform. SAP has a continuous innovation commitment, meaning users are always equipped with the latest tools. Product updates are included as standard and delivered regularly throughout the year without planning an upgrade strategy.

Where is SAP ByDesign hosted?
Typically, SAP Business ByDesign is hosted on SAP’s shared cloud infrastructure. This public cloud environment is hosted within SAP’s European data centres – other options are available, depending on your location. This shared environment is suited to smaller organisations that want to enjoy the efficiency and speed of working from a world-class platform. Public cloud options also provide more cost-effective hosting pricing.
Privately managed hosting cloud platforms are also available for SAP Business ByDesign for larger companies who require a dedicated environment specifically for their company.
